A room full of goldfish

a blog of stories and their illustrations

Hush! Here they come now! Watch! They descend in a cloud of powdery white, silently, unnoticed despite their number.

I spoke with one, once. Its’ sisters would not, but it spoke to me of frozen worlds and pale silent lakes. I say sisters, but really, they are together due to circumstance and chance rather than anything else.

The spell is hard to break. One requires a moonlit evening, the tears of an axolotl and, above all, the sacrifice of a courageous man.

And thus they wait in their graceful guises. The enchantment means they are not seen beneath their plumage.

But you scoff and say they are not trying hard enough. Beauty casts an enchantment of its own. They are simply not trying to escape.

They look at you disdainfully, barely inclining their slim long necks before simply gliding away.
